If so, Windows 8.1 will automatically detect it and allow you to reinstall Windows 8.1 without even asking you to enter a key. My laptop originally came with Windows 10 Home Single Language. However, I wanted to upgrade to Pro and I used the generic Windows product key to upgrade.
If you want to roll back, there are a number ways you can do this process. Today, we're going to look a three different ways. And then, click on the “Go back to Windows 8” if you want to restore your previous Windows.
Method one: Recovery by using a previous backup
Certain OEM versions of Windows come with the right to downgrade to a previous Windows version. If you're running Windows 10 Professional, you have the right to downgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro and Windows 7 Professional. When you get to the final screen, click the “Go back to Windows 7 (or 8.1)” button to make it happen.
I have ZERO APPS and what might be a good OS someday. Even if space weren't an issue on this little PC, this box allowed me to take my work anywhere because I had access to my OneDrive files via ICS, tethering it to my cell phone. I've watched movies on Netflix on this little box via tethering. Can no longer sync with SD card AND if you choose to sync some files, you can't see placeholders for files that are available online only. The process will take some time depending on your system configuration.
Why Rollback Windows 10 to Windows 7?
Windows 8.1 includes a built-in antivirus called Windows Defender. Windows 7 users can download Windows Defender or another free third-party Antivirus utility. For computers upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 or Windows 7, a limited option is available within 30 days to roll back to your previous version.
Click the “Get Started” button in that section to get rid of your Windows 10 install and restore your previous Windows install. Microsoft hopes to have Windows 10 running on 1 billion systems within three years. An admirable goal, but one that does not take into account the requirements of the user.
Other Options you should Consider Before Downgrading
But I expect good battery life from my Surface 3.. Windows 10 is only getting me about 6hrs vs 9hrs on Windows 8.1. I tested via upgrade and clean installation and with various power settings.. Couldn't get anywhere near as good battery life, hence I switched back to 8.1. You can simply make a new backup of your new files since the last full backup or just make a copy of all your files to an external hard drive.
Basically, if you own a “Pro” version of Windows, you’ll migrate to the Professional version of Windows 10. Otherwise, expect to receive a copy of Windows 10 Home. (We have more about theindividual Windows 10 editionshere.) Ignore the upgrade path for Windows phones for now; the platform is essentially defunct. During the update process, plan to invest some time in prep work and at least two hours in the upgrade process itself.

Note that there’s also the option to perform a “reset” of the PC, which can also help speed things up if Windows 10 is running slow. A clean install is sometimes a good idea—and another reason to back up your files. Thankfully, Microsoft now offers easy downloads for Windows 7 and 8.1 ISO files. Download the Windows installation media and burn the ISO file to a disc or copy it to a USB drive using Microsoft’s Windows USB/DVD download tool.
Click the option Custom , then select each partition, then click delete until there is only a single, unallocated disk. Click New;this will create a system recovery partition. Choose the larger system partition then click Next to install your version of Windows. Installing Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 is a relatively easy process. Your next best option is to borrow a corresponding Windows 7 Professional disc from a trusted friend or family member. A product key from a computer that is running Windows 7 Professional or Windows 8.1 Pro. If you are exercising downgrade rights from Windows 10 Pro OEM, this key can be either a retail upgrade, full version, OEM preinstalled, or System Builder product key. To remove it, follow the instructions below. First, locate the application that you wish to remove. Next, right-click it and choose Uninstall.
I tried windows 10 five times now but still has a big bug. Incompatibility with nvidia graphics drivers thats a few thousand users. Before i upgraded from win 8.1 pro 64 bit i run sfc/scannow no issues found upgrade and microsoft keep trying to overide nvidia graphics certain components only. I also found once that apps started to stop working one by opne they failed. Dont fix it sell it make more money even when it is microsfot that caused the problem.
All I am hoping for is Windows 10 gone, and 8.1pro installed and working. I read that I should return these computers and get new ones with Windows 7 but that is not an option. Please send me directions on setting these up on Windows 7. Also search Internet for how to install Win7 on Skylake processor. Are you ‘allowed’ to switch between, say, 7 and 10 as much as you want? Provided it's the same hardware, of course.
If your Windows 10 Home is not currently activated by a digital license, then you will need to Change product key to a Windows 10 Home key to activate. I was/am a fan of Windows 8.1 but I updated to windows 10 ,but in many ways it seems like a step backward. I know many people had a problem with windows 8.1 and so Microsoft had to do something ... I guess the learning curve was too much for some.
Now I will admit that if you would of asked me that question 2 weeks ago I would have considered going back because I was a fan of Windows 8.1 and was lamenting the new "tablet mode". I have a SP 3 and purchased it because I wanted the best of both worlds, laptop and tablet and Windows 8.1 was really conducive to achieving this goal. Like I said, I won't be going back, however, I definitely respect that some folks may choose to go back to Windows 8.1. Also, don't forget reinstall any software since the last backup. Installation through boot up does not accept any of my product keys.
